Robotic whole-body athletic: How does Atlas do parkour?

Humanoid robots are quickly learning physical skills that were previously limited only to us, humans.

In this video, the Atlas robot from Boston Dynamics does a parkour tour around a small custom-built track. As you will see, robotic motions are still a bit clumsy, but they are done with an unparalleled precision and high degree of repeatability, while also maintaining a correct body balance. And, of course, these robots know how to coordinate their actions when working as a team, so it is not a problem when a second robot joins in.

As the developers of the Atlas robot explain, parkour is a perfect sandbox where research and engineering team is able to experiment with the next-generation artificial intelligence, robotic mobility and control systems while performing high-energy activities under highly dynamic conditions.
