Russian tycoon Oleg Deripaska is suing the United States, alleging that it had overstepped its legal bounds in sanctioning his companies.

Mr Deripaska had to reduce his ownership of Rusal, the parent company of Aughinish Alumina in County Limerick, as part of a deal to lift sanctions on the company.

The Russian says the sanctions on his companies have made him the "latest victim" in the ongoing US probe into Moscow's alleged political interference.

In a legal filing, he asked the US District Court in Washington to block the US Treasury Department from using the "devastating power" of such economic sanctions that he said were inconsistent with US Constitution.

Aughinish Alumina employs 460 staff, 200 contractors and indirectly supports hundreds of additional jobs.
