Toyota today said it will build a new hybrid car in Britain for Japanese peer Suzuki – a welcome boost for the UK auto sector hit by Brexit uncertainty.

"Seeking to produce additional volume for other customers is one example of all the efforts we are making to keep our UK manufacturing operations as competitive as they can be" in the face of Brexit, Toyota said in a statement.

The Japanese company said it expects production of the new car to start in late 2020.
